Technologies to make current FPD have been matured and they are used to produce a fixed shape (Rectangular) and fine resolution FPD's mainly. On the other hand, the flexible and high dynamic range FPD's are expected as new generation FDP especially for automobile or wearable applications. Though OLED is expected as the next generation one, the performances of OLED are not enough, due to the low performances of light intensity and environmental resistance. Recently, the display with micro-LED or mini-LED are developed as next generation FPD instead of OLED. Micro LED's(generally smaller than 50 μm) are used for direct emission type FPD and Mini-LED's are used for backlight of local dimming type LCD. But considering the high dynamic range of LED, mini-LED on backlight will be replaced by the cheaper micro-LED.
Currently, the white fluorescent light excited by Blue LED is used for local dimming light source. The local dimming with R, G, B independent light sources would be better than the white one, but we should consider the cost. To generate 3 colors, we are employing UV-micro LED's that excite R, G, B fluorescent materials. It would be useful for not only high conversion efficiency but also cost effective one. In this presentation, comparison of these technologies will be discussed.
