Monolithic full color micro-LED display bonded onto silicon backplane, which we call “Silicon Display”, has been successfully demonstrated.
The 0.38-inch full-color Silicon Display consisting of 352 x 198 pixels has been developed. Each pixel is 24 um square composed of red, green, and blue (RGB) subpixels corresponding to a pixel density of 1053 ppi. We have also demonstrated the 0.13-inch full Silicon Display consisting of 352 x 198 pixels with pixel size of 8.4 um square corresponding to 3,000 ppi.
Each pixel is composed of red, green, and blue (RGB) subpixels and Quantum-dot materials are formed on III-nitride blue micro-LED array to convert blue light into red and green for full-color operation. Light shielding wall is the key technology to achieve full color preventing the optical cross-talk. We have confirmed that this microdisplay has wide color gamut exceeding over 100% of sRGB.
We believe our “Silicon Display” with combination of the monolithic micro LED and color converting approach is ideally suited for near-to-eye displays for augmented and mixed reality.
