LEDinside: 2020 Micro LED Next Generation Display Industry Trend

According to LEDinside, although Micro LED technology faces many challenges, compared with two years ago, the current technological progress has been much improved. The early patented technology has already appeared in the physical sample display machine. In the future, Micro LED’s commercialization will be driven by the growth of Micro LED technology. In addition, the manufacturing process of Micro LED is complex and the requirement becomes stricter. The raw materials, process consumables, production equipment, testing instruments and auxiliary fixtures used in the process require sophisticated specifications and relatively high precision. Because Micro LED Display is difficult to overcome the cost problem in the short term. Therefore, most manufacturers are investing in products such as TVs and Video Walls with the largest display area. Because of the high unit price of the large-size display, it can support the high-cost Micro LED Display in a short period of time, so it will have the opportunity to be introduced to the market first. In the short term, Mini LEDs possess a local dimming function, which possibly applied in tablets and gaming monitors. This is an opportunity to re-upgrade product specs and a chance to compete with OLED technology.

Micro Assembler Printer for LED and Beyond

We are developing a deterministic, directed, parallel electrostatic assembly and transfer process to arrange microLEDs and other IC chiplets. Singulated chips 10 um – 200 um in size are sorted, transported and oriented in solution. The arrangements are then transferred to a final substrate with contact stamping or an electrostatic roller belt. Demonstrations achieved include automated parallel assembly, micrometer scale registration, heterogeneous integration, inch scale outputs, and basic functional circuits. The eventual goal is the ability to integrate millions of chiplets into systems with fine control over large areas, at the cost of printing, to enable next generation microLED displays and heterogeneous electronic systems.

The Future of MicroLED Displays Using Next-Generation Technologies

This presentation will focus on Plessey’s pioneering proprietary approach to enable manufacturing of monolithic microLED arrays using gallium nitride (GaN)-on-silicon (Si) technologies to develop better optimised AR or MR displays applications. It describes the problems associated with incumbent micro-display technologies and the challenges which remain to pixel sizes of eight microns and sub-pixels of approximately four micron.

TFT Backplane Technologies for Micro LED Displays

The advantages like high efficiency, high brightness, long lifetime, wide color gamut and narrow emission peak and scalability make μ-LED technology one of the promising candidate for future flat panel displays. However, μ-LEDs based on silicon technologies are usually with high cost and limited to small size applications. On the other hand, LTPS TFT backplane can support high current driving with excellent stability, but the cost is still high and there is limit in glass size up to G6. On the other hand, oxide semiconductor TFT is more appropriate for large-area displays. The oxide TFTs can be used for μ-LED because of its advantages such as relatively high mobility over 10 cm2 V−1 s−1, low threshold voltage near 0 V, and extremely low leakage current. And the manufacturing cost can be very low compared to Si backplane. In this talk, I will address the issues on oxide TFT and LTPS TFT for active-matrix backplane μ-LED displays. In addition, I will explain our works on digital driving and QD PR technologies which were presented at SID 2019 Display Week in San Jose.

Roger Chu oversees the Green Energy Business Unit of TrendForce Corp., and specializes in market research on the LED industry, including end-product makers ranging from LED components, lighting, backlight to manufacturers. Additionally, he also handles the research on batteries in the Green Energy Business Unit. Mr.Chu once was an analyst at DRAMeXchange. He also worked for Hua Nan Securities as an analyst and Qunmao Management Consulting Company as a management trainee. Matt has over 30 years of global high technology experience concentrated in the computing technology markets, and is currently a Rohinni board member and its CEO. Prior to Rohinni, Matt was a board member and CEO at Digital Fortress, a Seattle based provider of hybrid cloud and colocation services; a board member and EVP at 2nd Watch, one of Amazon Web Services largest global business partners; a board member and CEO at IT-Lifeline, one of Amazon Web Services first business partners; and a board member and CEO at SprayCool, a provider of thermal management technologies for high performance computing applications. Matt is currently Board Chairman at TeraGo Networks, a publicly traded cloud, communications and data center company, and a board member at Pearson Packaging, a leading robotics packaging machinery manufacturer, and a board member at Perpetua, an electronics thermal management company. Matt holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and a Master of Business Administration with Distinction from Hofstra University.

Dr. Y. H. FANG received his PHD degree (2008) at National Taiwan University. He has been in ITRI since 2008. In this period, he focused on the topic of GaN substrate growth / UV LED on GaN substrate / GaN on Si for power device. For now, he is in charge of micro-LED team in ITRI and focusing on the technology of micro-LED from epitaxy, micro-chip process, mass transfer, high speed inspection, and system design. The micro-LED team led by him is building up the micro-LED platform applied for signage, vehicle, and AR application.

He graduated from Software Engineering of South China University of Technology in China in 2010 and worked on R&D of high-precision spectrometer system in 2014-2017. He joined Konica Minolta in 2017.

Dr. Eugene Chow is a principal scientist and manager of the microsystems research group in the electronic materials and devices laboratory at PARC (a Xerox Company). PARC (www.parc.com) has been an influential innovation center for 50 years and performs research and development with various industrial and government partners. Dr. Chow’s work has focused on developing microsystems for applications in printing for manufacturing, electronics integration and biomedicine. Recent projects include micro-assembly printers for device integration, microsprings for electronics packaging and test, and microjets for drug delivery. He leads research projects at PARC with support from Xerox, other companies and the government, and has filed over 100 patents. He earned a B.S. from U.C. Berkeley in engineering physics, and did his graduate work at Stanford University (M.S. engineering management, M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering).

Beginning her career as an R&D engineer in TSMC, Hsin-Ling has years of experience in patent assessment. Hsin-Ling is currently a senior patent engineer at the Technology Transfer and Law Center of ITRI, where she developed in-depth analyses on the technology evolution of micro-LED by combining documentary data, including academic publication and patent records, with the observation on the industry dynamics. Moreover, with prior knowledge of being patent examiner at Taiwan Intellectual Property Office, Hsin-Ling is particularly adept at scrutinizing the competitiveness of patent portfolio across enterprises, delivering comprehensive outlooks for technology layout.

Wei-Sin received his B.Eng. (Hons) and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Sheffield in 2000 and 2003, respectively. He has over 15 years’ experience in the compound semiconductor industry and has held various senior technical managerial roles in GaN on Silicon technology. He has authored over 50 publications and an inventor of over 20 patents. He is currently the Director of Product Development at Plessey Semiconductors.

Hyo‐Min Kim is a Research Professor at Department of Information Display of Kyung Hee University, Seoul, Rep. of Korea. His current researches are in light-emitting devices based on Micro‐LED, QDs, Perovskite and organics for display applications. He is the author or co-author of over 45 technical publications of which over 20 are in SCI Journals such as Nanoscale, Journal of Material Chemistry, ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, Organic Electronics, Advanced Functional Materials, Advanced Optical Materials. He is currently a Manager of Advanced Display Research Center (ADRC) and was awarded Distinguished Paper Award from SID in 2015 and 2019.

Dr. Sean Chen received his PhD of Electrical Engineering at National Taiwan University (2005). He focused on the study of TFT stability and epitaxy of III-V compound and quantum dot devices.
He has 10-year experience in flat panel display industry. In this period, he developed LTPS and p-i-n X-ray sensor on TFT. In addition, he is the founder of Ultra Display Technology since 2015, and the inventor of several patents of MicroLED mass transfer and bonding technologies.
