Life on the Edge. The Internet of Things (IoT) is poised to transform business and personal life forever. McKinsey & Co. estimated that emerging technologies for things like connected homes and smart factories will generate $4 trillion to $11 trillion of economic value worldwide by 2025.
IoT, however, will also generate a tremendous amount of data. Consider video analysis. The world’s 245 million security cameras generate exabytes of data each day. Autonomous cars can generate 1GB per second. Intelligent mines produce terabytes a day. Trying to transfer these data to centralized data warehouses for analysis will potentially cause networks to collapse as single streams of data turn into a flood.
Telecommunications companies and device manufacturers will need to collaboratively develop technologies and architectures so information can be analyzed, stored and shared on the edge. Device efficiency, storage capacity, bandwidth and other factors will also have to be considered together for companies to succeed.
Christopher Bergey, VP and GM of Mobile and Connected Solutions at SanDisk, will provide a comprehensive overview of the opportunities and challenges for data management created by IoT as well as an insider’s view into what companies are developing an intelligent edge. |
